What to do in a dental emergency in Granada

If you have acute pain, a blow or a broken tooth, call +34 958 11 24 37 or message WhatsApp on +34 628 41 66 01: we rearrange the schedule to see you as soon as possible at Calle Tablas 6, in central Granada.

Let us be clear about one thing, because it is the question we get most: we are not a twenty-four-hour service. We handle emergencies within our opening hours — Monday to Thursday 9:30 am to 1:30 pm and 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm, and Friday 9:30 am to 1:30 pm. If you write outside those hours we read it when we open and find you a slot as soon as we can; and if it is major trauma, bleeding that will not stop or swelling affecting your breathing or swallowing, the right place is a hospital emergency department.

The most frequent dental emergencies

Most of the emergencies we see fall into a few categories, and in nearly all of them time works against you: something that is simple to solve today can get complicated within days.

  • Intense or throbbing pain that keeps you awake, sometimes with sensitivity to heat.
  • Swelling of the gum or the face, with or without an abscess.
  • A tooth broken, cracked or chipped after a blow or biting something hard.
  • A tooth knocked out completely by trauma.
  • A filling, crown or veneer that has come out or come loose.
  • Pain after a recent treatment that is getting worse instead of better.
  • A loose wire or bracket that rubs or digs in.

What you can do on your way to the clinic

The first thing is to let us know: the sooner we understand what is happening, the better we can prepare and tell you what to do meanwhile. These general pointers do not replace an in-clinic assessment, but they help avoid making things worse.

  • If a whole tooth has come out, do not scrub the root: keep it in milk or saline and come in as soon as possible.
  • If there is swelling, cold on the outside of the cheek usually helps more than heat.
  • If a crown or filling has come out, keep it and bring it: sometimes it can be refitted.
  • Do not apply anything directly onto the gum or tooth on your own.
  • If you are taking any medication on your own initiative, tell us on arrival so we can take it into account.

What happens at the emergency visit

An emergency visit has one clear aim: to work out what is going on and relieve the pain. We start with the diagnosis — with digital radiology if needed — explain what we see, and act.

Sometimes the solution is definitive at that same visit and sometimes it is transitional: the situation is stabilised, the pain controlled and the full treatment planned calmly afterwards. We tell you which of the two applies before we start, and what your options are next.
