Your child's first dental visit: when and what it is like
We recommend the first visit around the first year of life or when the first teeth appear, even just to get to know the clinic. It is not about treating anything: it is about your child associating the dental chair with something calm before there is a problem to solve.
That first appointment is short. We look at how the teeth are coming through, go over hygiene with the parents and answer the questions from home: the dummy, the night-time bottle, how to brush when the little one will not let you.
Cavities in baby teeth: why they do need treating
"They are going to fall out anyway" is the most expensive mistake. An untreated cavity in a baby tooth can reach the nerve, hurt, become infected and affect the adult tooth forming right underneath.
On top of that, a baby tooth lost too early leaves no room for the one coming next: the neighbouring teeth drift and a space problem appears that later has to be corrected with orthodontics. Treating in time is almost always the simplest and least invasive option.
Prevention: sealants, check-ups and brushing technique
A sealant is a thin protective layer placed in the grooves of newly erupted adult molars, where the brush reaches least well. It is a quick preventive step, it does not require touching the tooth and it is checked at following visits.
The rest of prevention happens at home. At the check-up we teach the brushing technique to the child and to whoever helps them, and we adjust the interval between visits to the state of their mouth and their cavity risk.
When to look at the bite and children's orthodontics
While the teeth are changing is when bite and space problems show up most clearly. Looking early does not mean starting early: it means knowing whether it is better to wait or whether something is far easier to correct now than in five years' time.
If it is needed, we also do orthodontics at the clinic, so the assessment and the treatment happen with the same team and the same clinical record.
