Cap or crown: they are the same thing

"Cap" and "crown" are the same thing said two ways: a piece that completely covers the tooth and gives it back shape, colour and strength. It goes on when too little healthy tooth remains to hold a filling, after a root canal, or on an implant to replace a missing tooth.

So the real decision is not between a cap and a crown: it is which material is used, how it is designed and how precisely it fits at the margin. That is where lasting years or causing trouble is decided.

Materials: zirconia, lithium disilicate and resin

We work with cutting-edge materials — lithium disilicate, zirconia and premium PMMA — and the choice depends on where the tooth is and how much force it has to take. Disilicate performs very well in the aesthetic zone because of how it transmits light; zirconia copes better with the load on a molar.

With good hygiene and check-ups, a zirconia or disilicate crown can last 10-15 years or more. The fit matters as much as the material: a crown that seals well at the margin is a crown decay does not get underneath.

How a crown is made with digital CAD/CAM design

The process starts with an intraoral scan, no pastes or trays. The piece is designed on that 3D model in CAD/CAM, the fit and aesthetics are tried in your mouth, and only then is the final one made.

That try-in is what avoids colour surprises: the shade is decided with the piece in place and you in front of the mirror, not from a catalogue.

  • 3D intraoral scan of the prepared tooth and of your bite.
  • Digital CAD/CAM design of the crown.
  • Try-in: fit, colour and contact with neighbouring teeth.
  • Final placement, cemented or screwed depending on the prosthesis type.

Fixed or removable: which suits each case

It depends on how many teeth are missing, the state of the bone and your budget. A fixed prosthesis — on a tooth or on an implant — is the most comfortable and the closest to what you had. A removable one is a more affordable option and remains a good solution in many cases.

It is not a decision made at the front desk: it is made after the study, looking at what is there on screen. The first visit and digital diagnosis are free and you leave with a fixed quote.

Frequently asked

What patients ask us most.

  • It depends on how many teeth are missing, bone condition and your budget. Fixed prosthetics (on tooth or implant) are the most comfortable and natural; removable ones are a more affordable option. We assess this at your free first visit.
